What it's actually like to own one
German Shepherds are working dogs that have never forgotten it. They're fiercely loyal, staggeringly intelligent, and capable of learning almost anything you teach them. GSDs bond deeply with their person and take that job seriously.
The reality check: a bored GSD is a destructive GSD. They need a job โ whether that's obedience training, agility, or a long daily run. They shed twice a year heavily and lightly the rest of the time (so, constantly). They can be wary of strangers and need thorough socialisation as puppies.
For experienced owners who can meet their mental and physical needs, a GSD is an extraordinary companion. First-time owners should think carefully โ this breed demands more than most.
๐ Training snapshot
German Shepherds have an independent streak โ early, consistent training is key. Short sessions with high-value treats work far better than repetition.
