They're affectionate without being needy, playful without being hyperactive, and famously good with children and other pets. They adapt to almost any living situation, from a Bondi apartment to a Queensland acreage, as long as their people are nearby. Their confidence is outsized: a Shih Tzu genuinely believes they're the most important member of the household, and they're usually right.
Be honest about two things before committing. First, the coat: left long it needs daily brushing; most Australian owners keep a practical short clip requiring professional grooming every 6–8 weeks. Second, the face: Shih Tzus are brachycephalic (flat-faced), which means genuine heat sensitivity in the Australian summer, snoring, and potential airway issues.
